From A Mother, To Her Daughter

Dear Daughter,

There is so much you need to learn in this world. Some need to be taught, while some need to be realized. But here are a few things that I want you to know and I hope you will teach the same to other girls of your age too.

  • No dress, jewelery or makeup will make you look more beautiful than your smile.
  • It is also okay to think another woman is prettier than you.
  • You need to make girlfriends with whom you would oust anyone who thinks less of a woman.
  • Do not let a man change you. Just because he pays for dinner, he still does not own you. Not even he is your husband.
  • Develop your voice and opinion. Make it healthy and loud.
  • If someone underestimates you, beat them and beat them good. Do not let anyone tell you ‘you can’t do it’.
  • Don’t let anyone tell you ‘you can’t do it because you are a girl’.
  • Respect yourself.
  • Only then will anyone respect you.
  • Respect those who deserve it.
  • Do new things. Try that pixie haircut you have been wanting. Hair grows back anyway(faster if you get my hair genes).
  • Learn how to say ‘NO’.
  • Learn to walk away when you need to. When it is no longer healthy.
  • Being intimidating is not a bad or ‘manly’ thing.
  • Clothes don’t have gender. Wear that loose, baggy t-shirt anyway. You will still look like a girl.
  • Feminism is not  cliche, tag or a slang. It is a lifestyle. Don’t be scared to be a feminist.

    Feminism is not scary.

  • Do not stretch yourself thinner than your elasticity for anyone else. It is necessary to keep a line.
  • But find your limits and go beyond as much as you can; for yourself.
  • Have an elaborate vocabulary and great grammar. Nothing is better than a girl who can speak.
  • If you are fat, it doesn’t matter. If you are bony, still doesn’t matter. As long as it is not affecting your health, you body shape does not matter.
  • There are stylish clothes for all body types. Just find your brand.
  • Remember, people have different tastes. Do not shun them.
  • Kindness is the most beautiful aspect in you. Not your body.

  • Be honest. So honest that people value your opinion.
  • Those who matter don’t mind; those who mind, don’t matter.
  • No boy is worth crying for. Unless he is your son.
  • Do not accept wrong from anyone. Not even from your father, your husband or me.
  • It is okay to need help once in a while.
  • You do not need to be perfect.
  • You are not anyone’s thing or property.
  • Or their reputation.
  • People younger than you should also be respected.
  • Meet someone who makes you laugh until you pee and your stomach hurts. Hold on to him.

  • One day, when you are married with kids, your husband may tell you ‘your daughter gets her attitude from you’. Don’t be upset. It is your proudest moment.
  • People who bring you down every time, need to go.
  • You might not be right or win every time. You are human and mistakes happen.
  • Forgive yourself.
  • Be unapologetically you.
  • Travel solo.

  • Travel with the love of your life.
  • Join a self-defense class.
  • Learn how to drive. It is a very important step to independence.
  • Read. Read a lot. Read until no one dares to go on a debate with you.
  • Tattoos are permanent. Most people are not.
  • Work your ass off. Be independent.
  • Save your own money.
  • Take constructive criticism and work on it.
  • Take a compliment.
  • But be humble.
  • Remember, education does not end at school.
  • Find a hobby.
  • Be so passionate that people think you are deranged.
  • Run like a girl. Fight like a girl. Talk like a girl. Cry like a girl. It is not shameful. Walk away from people who tell you so.
  • Happiness comes from cheesecakes and from within. No friend or boyfriend can get it for you.
  • Stop worrying about what people think.
  • If you are in a closet, take your time. But know that you will still be my same daughter.
  • Maturity is not an age. It is a state of mind.
  • Make a bucket list and fulfill all that you can.
  • Get a puppy. Raise it like your own child.

  • Your dreams are made for you to own it.
  • Your father may be strict. But remember he only cares and worries about you. He loves you in his own (sometimes weird) way.
  • Lastly, I am here to hug/kiss you 24/7. Do not hesitate to come to me. Even when I am not there with you physically.

your mother is always there for you 24/7

No matter how mature or old you grow. You will still be my baby. <3

Hey. I am Sagarika. I hail from the City of Joy. Though I have graduated as an engineer, writing has always been my calling. What had started as a weird Paragraph at an essay writing competition, has now turned into an all time passion for me. Though the entire world is my muse, dogs are my favourite form of life.
