Music comes out only from a broken heart. A very famous dialogue in the movie Rockstar starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakri. The whole movie was a consequence of a budding talented singer wanting to make it big in the industry. This might have been a super duper hit movie, but as an afterthought, the theme of the movie may not be that far away from reality. What do these musicians lose in their path to fame? What takes such a big toll on them? One of my very favorite rapper Eminem himself almost fell to his deathbed, until he was institutionalized and rehabilitated for months. While alcoholism and drug addiction is a worldwide problem, why are musicians the most affected by it? Guess we would never know, but here is a tribute to all those musicians who left us too early in a way we would never have wanted to let them go.
1. Kurt Cobain
Kurt Cobain, king of grunge music. His music had something that touched souls as each had a theme that tapped into a deep dark part of ourselves. I found myself stalking Kurt Cobain after having stumbled into his cover of ‘The Man Who Sold The World’. Cobain was found dead in his home with a suicide note addressed to his childhood imaginary friend Boddah. He had shot himself after years of drug abuse. Kurt Cobain broke the world with his death. He died before my time, and yet I miss him.
2. Chester Bennington
Linkin Park is probably the first English rock band that I and people of my generation have heard. With songs like ‘Numb’ and ‘In The End’, Chester Bennington holds a special place in our hearts. It is still hard to believe that he is gone. Bennington was found dead by hanging in his apartment. He had filmed an episode of Carpool Karaoke 6-days before he died, which was aired later. It broke my heart.
3. Michael Jackson
King of Pop, Michael Jackson was probably the most respected and celebrated pop singer of the time. Not only as a singer, he was an amazing dancer with moves like no one else. No one would ever moonwalk the way he did. He had died due to drug overdose. The news spread rapidly internet, making sites back off and crash from client over-burden, and putting extraordinary strain on administrations and sites including Google, AOL Moment Messenger, Twitter, and Wikipedia.
4. Whitney Houston
Songs by Whitney Houston is known to be the most difficult to sing. The world lost Whitney to a drug overdose. She was found unconscious and submerged in her bathtub. Later in the coroner’s report, high levels of cocaine was found. It was found that Houston had used the substance shortly before her death. She had drowned herself.
5. Elliott Smith
The 34 year old singer and song-writer was found dead from stab wounds by his partner. Though there have always been talks about the possibility of homicide, his death is still considered a suicide as like others on this list, he was battling chronic deppression. A suicide note was found which said “I’m sorry, Love– Eliot. God forgive me”. His songs had a deep dark keynote that gave us goosebumps.
“Drink up one more time and I’ll make you mine,
Keep you apart, deep within my heart,
Separate from the rest, Where I like you the best
And keep the things you forgot” ~ Behind The Bars
6. Marilyn Monroe
Still considered as the most popular sex symbol, Marilyn Monroe was mostly known as an actor, but few know that she was also a singer. Marilyn was found deceased in her bed by her housekeeper and her therapist. Her death was connected to acute barbiturate poisoning. Marilyn Monroe gave the world not only great movies and songs, but she is a model for many girls who follow her quotes with a passion.
7. Jimi Hendrix
Ask anyone who plays or hopes to play the guitar, he wants to play it like Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix, one of the most celebrated musicians, died by choking on his vomit. He had taken 18 times the prescribed amount of sleeping pills the night before his death as he could not fall asleep, reported his girlfriend. He was a violent alcoholic as well as addicted to several drugs.
Almost all musicians are reported to be victims of depression and other mental disorders. There have been studies that conclude that musicians die about 25 years younger than the average person. Why?
“COME TO ME, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I WILL GIVE YOU REST. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matthew 11:29-30).
